( KRON ) — A Goodwill store opening inside a Milpitas correctional facility is breaking new ground as it employs women in custody and provides real-world retail experience.

The Goodwill store on the Elmwood Correctional Campus “allows women to gain hands-on training in warehousing, inventory and logistics through a comprehensive three-part training series,” the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday. The incarcerated women will manage the day-to-day operations of the store.

As the participants of the program near release, they will be allowed to shop the store’s clothing free of charge, the sheriff’s office said. Officials tout that it will help the women reenter society with additional skills and a pathway to future employment.

“We are offering something powerful: opportunity, dignity, and a fresh start,” said Goodwill Vice President of Retail Jessica Castello. “Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of women who deserve a second chance, and we’re showing that it’s never too late to rebuild, to learn, and to thrive.”

The store’s grand opening ceremony was held Tuesday.

🐂💩! This is nothing but modern day slavery paid by state tax dollars!Remember, these inmates are the property of whichever facility the sentenced now ex-citizen is now to resignthis means that the tax dollars that keeps the specific prison system open also has the ability to rent the occupants out like tools at a home Depot And for the looks of this article, this also counts as "rehabilitation" toward the inmates🤔Never mind if any of this will be helpful when the inmate leaves the prison system if they ever do it at all 😒🇺🇸

problem is that they go back to the same environment that got them there in the first place. once outside, they really do not have any support system when the urge to think of committing a crime. you serve your time now, and you go out to be productive. it is known that it is harder for those with a criminal record to find a job. they do not have a counselor to talk to once they are out. some type of a support system. only support system they have is the very same people got them locked up.
