Girls 5A semifinal – Volcano Vista takes down No. 1 Hobbs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For a 5th straight year, Volcano Vista and Hobbs met in the Pit. This meeting would be the first time that the Eagles and Hawks met outside of the championship game, but even a semi-final match between the two squads went down to the wire.

In the end, it would be the Hawks out on top, 49-42. The result ends the Eagles run of consecutive state championship appearances at six.

The Hawks soared out to an early lead, as Mila Espinoza connected on three first quarter triples. They were also able to control the paint and gain a lead as much as 20 by the second quarter.

While the Eagles came back to tie the game in the second half, they were never able to gain the lead. Volcano Vista did not give them much opportunity to, as the Hawks won the rebounding battle 40-26. VV also recorded 20 offensive rebounds.

The Hawks are now back in the championship game for a 5th straight year. Volcano Vista will play Sandia at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
