ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Military Institute has a new Head Football Coach, as Oliver Soukup replaces Kurt Taufa’asau. Soukup took over the program in June and while he has had to hit the road running, to prepare for their season opener on August 29th, Soukup is optimistic and also confident that this team will be more than prepared .

“You know, every place that I have been, it’s always kind of been a rebuild, but this is a good situation coming in. I have been really pleased with everybody, great staff, you know, the guys and everybody has been putting everything together,” said NMMI Head Football Coach Oliver Soukup.

A native of New Mexico, Soukup played college football at NMSU. After his collegiate playing career, Soukup went on to coach, making stops at NMMI, ENMU, and NMSU. Coming back to NMMI for a second time, this will mark his first collegiate head coaching job.

NMMI has a tough challenge in their season opener, as they play at NJCAA National Runner-up Hutchinson Community College on the 29, but the players are bought into what Coach Soukup is preaching, and Volcano Vista graduate and current NMMI Quarterback Elliot Paskett-Bell, believes that Soukup is the perfect guy for the job.

“Yeah, I feel like he has instilled a lot of discipline on us from day one, and that’s definitely helped us go through, and stay good and stay on course. We are a very disciplined team right now, and I feel like there is no where to go but up,” said Elliot Paskett-Bell.

“The two things that I care about are number 1, winning and their success. So, I want to win a lot of football games here, and I want to place a lot of guys to the four-year colleges that they want to go to,” said Soukup.

The NMMI Broncos open their season on August 29 at Hutchinson Community College at 5 p.m.
