ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – UNM Football wrapped up week three of Fall Camp on Saturday with their second, and final, scrimmage of camp. Lobos Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall is happy with the progression that he has seen in his team so far this fall, and now it’s about tightening the screws as they close in on their season opener.

“The clear strength of this team and this program to this point is their willingness, their work ethic, and their hope, but even more so, their belief that what we are going to do will have success. In terms of what to work on, yeah, with two weeks to go, specificity, precision, of execution. So, it’s two minute; it’s red zone; it’s third down, etc.,” said Bronco Mendenhall.

Devon Dampier is the starting quarterback for the Lobos heading into the season, but there is a heated battle for the backup position. Rio Rancho graduate and current red-shirt senior Isaiah Chavez is making a strong case to be UNM’s back-up heading into the season. Chavez broke off a huge run in Saturday’s scrimmage, and he has really impressed Coach Mendenhall this fall. Mendenhall doesn’t have a definitive answer on who will be Dampier’s backup, but he did say that the competition is making the decision hard.

UNM has one more week of Fall Camp, and their season opener will be at home on August 24, against Montana State.
