NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Thunderstorms will be the most likely across the region for the next couple of days as some rain is still lingering this morning, but temperatures are still above normal. Along with plenty of clouds blanketing the northwestern two-thirds of the region, isolated strong thunderstorms are moving east-northeast around Clayton, Santa Fe, The Jemez Mountains, and Durango, while some northward-moving showers with rumbles of thunder are very spotty to the west of The Metro. Meanwhile, conditions are clearer to the southeast relatively with humid air at the surface for most as despite rainfall in the short term, afternoon temperatures will still be at least a few degrees above normal.

    Forecast Continues Below

It’s generally another morning of above-normal morning temperatures with most of the northern mountain communities starting off in the high 40’s, 50’s, and lower 60’s, while valley locations are mostly ranging from the upper 50’s to even the low 80’s around Roswell. As temperatures across the region rise once again from the morning school commute into the upper 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and triple digits by the afternoon, plenty of moisture in the air, along with enough daytime heating, will lead to the likelihood of rainfall for some. The northern and western areas have the best chance of rain for today with flash flooding possible in the northern burn-scars with even some rain possible around Ruidoso this afternoon. Parts of The San Juan Mountains, The Gila National Forest, and eventually the northern three-fourths of The Rio Grande Valley as well, will have the potential for some potent storms today that will generally pivot to the north slowly then faster to the east later on especially in The Northeast Highlands. By this afternoon, some pockets of torrential rain, accumulating hail, erratic winds potentially gusting from the eastern canyons eventually, and plenty of lightning strikes will ensue.

With a high pressure system just to the east of most of New Mexico in the short term, moisture will be trapped across the region, but drier air will eventually win on out later this week with more sunshine and hotter air.
