LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Another massive Amazon warehouse is now up and running south of Albuquerque bringing hundreds of new jobs.

This new “fulfillment center” is similar to the Albuquerque one the company opened a few years ago. Over a million square feet, the Los Lunas center has a mile-long walk around the perimeter, and with new jobs the retail giant also hopes it means faster New Mexico deliveries.

“We’re excited to launch this building in a community that has been nothing but a stellar partner with Amazon,” said Sam Bailey, Senior Manager Economic Developer for Amazon.

After three years of planning, it’s a big deal for Los Lunas with the multi-billion-dollar online retailer Amazon, opening the doors on another New Mexico fulfillment center. “From when this was a piece of land with a lot of history, to now a place where people find a quality job and benefits starting their very first day,” said Bailey.

The new facility called “ABQ2” represents the second hub in central New Mexico, along with “ABQ1” on the West Mesa just outside Albuquerque. Workers are now in the fifth week of operations at the site with nearly 1,100 employees. On Tuesday, the company opened the doors for a tour.

“It’s a very large facility. It’s intended to serve its customers downstream like ABQ1, like the delivery stations in Albuquerque. Helping Amazon get the right products as close to our customers as we can,” said Nikolai Talento, Site Lead for Los Lunas Amazon fulfillment center.

Amazon says they’ve mostly hired positions requiring manual labor and they’re still looking for more workers. A Los Lunas Village spokeswoman said the jobs are even attracting people who don’t live in Los Lunas commuting from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and even Gallup to work there.

“Los Lunas is no longer just a sleepy bedroom community to Albuquerque. For a long time our residents were living in Los Lunas, working in Albuquerque, we’re seeing that traffic turn around,” said Victoria Archuleta, Senior Economic Developer, Village of Los Lunas.

Amazon says this new facility cost $300 million to build. They add that in total, they’ve spent more than $1.6 billion in the entire state. People interested in applying for jobs at the Los Lunas facility can visit the Amazon website .
