NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Hit-and-miss showers with even a few weakening thunderstorms are quickly drifting off to the east-northeast in northern Albuquerque, The South Valley, parts of The Four Corners, The Northern Mountains, and from Las Cruces to Roswell, with clearer skies starting to return from the west, setting the stage for a warmer day ahead. Relatively cooler and humid air is leftover this morning from yesterday’s active storm day though, so some lingering moisture will still produce some spotty rain activity for some areas this afternoon.

    Forecast Continues Below

Morning temperatures are close to normal for many with a cooler start with most of the northern mountain communities starting off in the high 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and low 60’s, while valley locations are mostly ranging from the 50’s to the 70’s. As temperatures across the region rise from the morning school commute into the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and near 100 degrees in a few southern areas by the afternoon, lingering moisture in the air, along with enough daytime heating, will lead to some sporadic afternoon rainfall. The northern and eastern third of the region has the best chance of rain for today with flash flooding not nearly as likely in the northern burn-scars, as well as around Ruidoso in the early afternoon hours. Some of The San Juan Mountains, The Gila National Forest, and eventually a small swath of The Rio Grande Valley, as well as The Eastern Plains, will have the possibility for a few storms today that will generally pivot to the northeast quickly later on. By this afternoon, a few pockets of heavy rain, some hail, gusty winds, and lightning strikes will ensue.

With a high pressure system still to the east of New Mexico in the short term moving eastward, moisture will be allowed to exit the region as drier air from the west will eventually really win on out later this week with more sunshine and hotter air.
