    NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Check out community events around New Mexico from August 16-22.

    Albuquerque

    • August 16-17 The Show – Albuquerque’s longest-running comedy show happens every Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.
    • August 17 Downtown Growers’ Market – This happens every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at Robinson Park.
    • August 17 Winrock Market – The market presented by Sandia Laboratory begins at 9:00 a.m. at 2100 Louisiana Blvd NE.
    • August 17 CNM Instructor Hiring Fair – CNM is hiring full and part-time instructors at this event in Smith Brasher Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
    • August 17 Auditions for Xanadu – The Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Company is hosting auditions for a production of Xanadu at the Box Performance Space and Improv Theatre beginning at 11:00 a.m.
    • August 17 All About UFOs – The International District Library is hosting an eye-opening journey into the world of UFOs and UAPs. The event begins at 2:00 p.m.
    • August 17 ALT auditions for DRACULA: A Comedy of Terrors – Albuquerque Little Theatre is looking for adult actors for their upcoming production. Auditions begin at 10:00 a.m.
    • August 17-18 Flea Market – Head to ExpoNM to check out trinkets, charms, and more. Admission is $10 per car or $2 for walk-ups.
    • August 18 Family Day at the Rail Yards Market – All types of families are invited to enjoy farm, food, and art vendors from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
    • August 18 Salsa on Sunday at the Gazebo in Old Town – DJ Pancho will set up at the Gazebo from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

    New Mexico

    • August 16 Second Chance Prom – The Harwood Museum of Art in Taos is holding this event at 6:00 p.m.
    • August 16 Movies Under the Stars! – At Cabezon Park and Community Center in Rio Rancho, Lady and the Tramp will be shown beginning at 7:45 p.m.
    • August 16 Community & Crafts – This event at Meow Wolf is in conjunction with ArtWalk Santa Fe and begins at 5:30 p.m.
    • August 16-18 The Spongebob Musical Youth Edition – The Children’s Theatre of the Mesilla Valley presents this production at the Rio Grande Theatre in Las Cruces.
    • August 17 Saturday Farmers Market – The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is open year-round on Saturdays in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.
    • August 17 Fashion Show in Alamogordo – The fashion show at the White Sands Mall in Alamogordo begins at 10:00 a.m.
    • August 17 Farmer’s Market in Alamogordo – Check out offerings from local farmers, crafters, bakers, and more from Otero County. Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
    • August 18 Sunday Chess Club – Popolo’s Games in Taos will host this free chess club open to all ages at 1:00 p.m.
    • August 18 Sunday is Funday – This family event will be happening at Haynes Park in Rio Rancho from noon to 4:00 p.m.
    • August 18 Kids’ Zone & Fireman’s Park Clean Up – This trash and graffiti cleanup event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Kidz Zone in Alamogordo.

    Albuquerque Notices

    🔶 New scholarship available for Indigenous students studying film at UNM – The Department of Film and Digital Arts announced the scholarship is specifically for Indigenous students. It’s to support those students and a new course called Indigenous People on Screen.

    🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It’ll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. To get involved, you can apply here.

    🔶 World Indigenous Business Forum coming to Albuquerque in October – The event will bring in more than 1,000 visitors and 20 guest speakers from around the world, to promote and learn about businesses from across the United States, and more than 20 different countries.

    🔶 City leaders highlight Albuquerque housing projects – City officials say upcoming projects will create more than 300 new housing units in Albuquerque.

    🔶 U.S. Attorney General speaks on decrease in violent crime in Albuquerque – United States Attorney General, Merrick Garland, was in Albuquerque today discussing crime in the metro and the state. Though some categories of violent crime are on a downward trend, community members say there’s still work to be done.

    🔶 ABQ BioPark mourns passing of African serval – The ABQ BioPark announced Tuesday that Savanna, the African serval, has died. At 22 years old, Savanna exceeded the life expectancy of 13.5 years for a serval.

    🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

    🔶 Albuquerque shines on Yelp board game cafe list – For those in the know, Albuquerque is a choice spot to engage in some tabletop goodness and Yelp users have taken notice. A recent Yelp list ranking the 20 top board game cafes named two Albuquerque spots: Empire Board Game Library in Nob Hill and Slice and Dice Pizzeria with locations on the west and east sides of town.

    🔶 City of Albuquerque providing food, clothes for families in need – The City of Albuquerque has several resources available for families who may need assistance with food and clothes during the summer. Resources include summer youth programs, clothing banks, and food assistance.

    🔶 City of Albuquerque looking for volunteers to help monitor trails – Trail Watch volunteers work under the Open Space Division and report wildlife and visitor activities, maintenance needs, suspicious activity, and other information. Training and a background check are required to become a Trail Watch Volunteer.

    New Mexico Notices

    🔶 Five delinquent property tax auctions scheduled in August – The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is holding delinquent property tax auctions in Roosevelt, De Baca, McKinley, Curry, and Los Alamos counties. Registration for the auctions is available in person at 8 a.m. on the day of the auction.

    🔶 Bill aims to explore feasibility of moving Soldiers’ Monument to Santa Fe National Cemetery – It’s the latest proposal on what to do with the Soldier’s Monument in Santa Fe after the obelisk at the center of the plaza was torn down by protestors in 2020. Now, there is a new proposal to look into the feasibility of moving it to the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

    🔶 Santa Fe Police ask city councilors to fund new armored vehicles – Amid growing concerns about crime in their city, a northern New Mexico police department is looking at spending more than a million dollars to add new armored vehicles to its force. Deteriorating window laminate, older technology, and a slew of mechanical problems are just a few of the reasons why Santa Fe police are pushing for a new fleet of armored vehicles.

    🔶 How do I get a handicap placard when I need one in New Mexico? – Handicap placards are an important tool for citizens who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act to use them. However, there are some misconceptions about who can use them and how much it costs to get one.

    🔶 State Department of Health asking Ruidoso residents about improving disaster readiness – The state wants to learn more about how it can improve emergency services. The survey opened on Tuesday and they will continue making door-to-door visits to Ruidoso residents throughout the week.

    🔶 Santa Fe looks to open more Pallet shelters for unhoused individuals – The city is currently looking for privately owned properties to host 64-square-foot shelters, which come from the manufacturer Pallet. The manufactured shelters can accommodate one or two people and have interchangeable bed and desk options, climate control systems, LED lighting, and a locking door.

    🔶 NM Taxation & Revenue Dept. using letters to remind residents of payments – For anyone who has received one of the letters, the department said it’s important to respond within the specified timeline. Letters have also notified taxpayers of any liens and other collection actions.

    🔶 Amazon fulfillment center opens in Los Lunas – This new “fulfillment center” is similar to the Albuquerque one the company opened a few years ago. Over a million square feet, the Los Lunas center has a mile-long walk around the perimeter, and with new jobs the retail giant also hopes it means faster New Mexico deliveries.

    🔶 UNM-Gallup gives local high school students hands-on experiences, kickstarting future careers – The Center for Career and Technical Education at the University of New Mexico’s Gallup campus is designed to give students a jumpstart into their future. Welding, construction, and automotive technology are just some of the twelve programs offered to students.

    🔶 New Mexico Downwinders call for action on Radiation Exposure Compensation Act – A federal law to apologize and compensate victims of radiation exposure is at a standstill in the United States Senate. Victims of the 1945 Trinity Bomb fallout said it still affected their families.
