Record heat for some parts of New Mexico ahead

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Heat Advisories are in effect for some as record heat will be possible in and around the Metro today with an uptick in monsoonal thunderstorms, but most will remain rain-free, as well as dry. Despite a few weakening showers with rumbles of thunder much earlier this morning around the metro, virtually all of the rain has ceased to the east as a remaining shower moved on through Corona. While some moisture is still trapped aloft, skies are nonetheless mostly clear from clouds as the atmosphere has significantly dried out at the surface across even more areas this morning, courtesy of a high pressure system overhead.

Morning temperatures are still relatively close to normal in the northern mountain communities with a few areas starting off in the high 30’s, but mostly 40’s, 50’s, and low 60’s, while valley locations are mostly ranging from the 50’s to the 70’s. As temperatures across the region rise from the morning school commute into the high 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and above 100 degrees for more areas by the afternoon, some moisture in the air, along with plenty of daytime heating, will lead to slightly more areas receiving rainfall across the viewing area. The southern and eastern areas of the region has the best chance of rain for today with flash flooding possible with a few thunderstorms around Ruidoso in the early-to-mid afternoon hours. Hit-or-miss weak thunderstorms will move slowly in the northern mountains and the Gila National Forest as well with some leftover showers around Albuquerque tonight. Today’s storms not only have the higher potential for some localized heavy doses of rain, but also, some hail, strong winds, and frequent lightning strikes.

Most will still remain rain-free this weekend with more stagnant air building in New Mexico with moisture only hugging the eastern and mountainous terrain ahead with drier air from the west really winning on out with more sunshine and even more record heat for some.
