Albuquerque councilors focus on AI protection bill for city government

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two Albuquerque city councilors are introducing a bill on Monday that would help bring rules and regulations on best practices for using artificial intelligence (AI) in city government.

With the growing AI technology comes increasing concerns about properly using it.

“There’s just a lot of unknowns right now. AI is moving very quickly,” said Albuquerque City Councilor Tammy Feibelkorn.

Councilors Feibelkorn and Daniel Champine are working to introduce a new bill to help set perimeters in city government.

The resolution aims to create a group to oversee the development of those policies.

“We want to make sure that we’re also looking at equity, civil rights, and making sure that anytime we use AI outside of those basic functions, that it’s something that works for the people of Albuquerque,” said Feibelkorn.

This will allow different city departments like the Department of Technology and Innovation, the Mayor’s Office, and the Office of Equity and Inclusion to collaborate and create a policy proposal.

“It’s hard to say [what will happen] because AI is changing so quickly, and we know there are some really good opportunities to use it.”

One city department is currently using AI in day-to-day operations to better serve the public.

“[Albuquerque Fire Rescue] is actually using AI now to better facilitate calls into 911 to help make sure that calls are routed correctly. That’s a really good use of AI.”

If the resolution passes, the group will take around six months to come up with the policies, and then the council will vote to approve them.
