Albuquerque

• August 23-24 The Show – Albuquerque’s longest-running comedy show happens every Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.
• August 23-24 Bosque Chile & Music Fest – This event at Expo New Mexico will have artisan vendors, fiery chile demos, and live performances from local bands.
• August 23-24 Launchpad Birthday Bash – The Albuquerque venue celebrates 27 years serving the Duke City this weekend.
• August 23-25 Bubonicon 55 – New Mexico’s best and longest-running Sci-Fi Fantasy literary and arts convention happens this weekend at the Albuquerque Marriott Uptown.
• August 24 Downtown Growers’ Market – This happens every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at Robinson Park.
• August 24-25 Flea Market – Head to ExpoNM to check out trinkets, charms, and more. Admission is $10 per car or $2 for walk-ups.
• August 25 – Paint Your Pet Class – Kelly Jo Designs by Wine presents this once-a-month event as they guide you to be able to paint a portrait of your pet. The event begins at 4:00 p.m.
• August 25 Water Day at the Rail Yards Market – Along with what you would normally expect at the market, there will also be the ABQ Seed Library and more.
• August 27 Colcha Community Stitch-A-Long – All levels of experience are welcome to this informal event at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Begins at 9:30 a.m. in person and 10:30 a.m. on Zoom.
• August 29 Ancora and Albuquerque’s Songwriter’s Cooperative Open Mic – Every Thursday night at Ancora Cafe and Bakery, try your hand at performing some of your own music. Begins at 5:00 p.m.

New Mexico

• August 23 Michael Martin Murphey – Murphey performs at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe beginning at 7:00 p.m.
• August 23 Friday Night Magic Standard Showdown – Rocket City Gaming Lounge in Alamogordo hosts this Magic the Gathering standard tournament beginning at 5:30 p.m.
• August 24 Saturday Farmers Market – The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is open year-round on Saturdays in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.
• August 24 2024 Silver City Farmers’ Market – The market at 1120 N. Main St. in Silver City begins at 9:00 a.m. to noon.
• August 24 Elizabeth Lockhart and friends – Traditional and contemporary folk music will be presented at Palacio Restaurant in Santa Fe beginning at 7:00 p.m.
• August 24 Farmer’s Market in Alamogordo – Check out offerings from local farmers, crafters, bakers, and more from Otero County. Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
• August 24 Dwight Yoakam & the Mavericks – This all-ages concert at Kit Carson Park in Taos begins at 6:00 p.m.
• August 24-25 5th Annual Pirate Viking Summer Festival – The Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood will host this event beginning at 10:00 a.m. on both days.
• August 25 Sunday Chess Club – Popolo’s Games in Taos will host this free chess club open to all ages at 1:00 p.m.
• August 27 Swing on the Plaza – This free event on the Plaza de Las Cruces begins with free lessons at 7:00 p.m. and a free dance at 8:00 p.m.

Albuquerque Notices

🔶 New scholarship available for Indigenous students studying film at UNM – The Department of Film and Digital Arts announced the scholarship is specifically for Indigenous students. It’s to support those students and a new course called Indigenous People on Screen.

🔶 Report: Sandia Science & Technology Park has paid $7.7B in wages since 1988 – The report, by the Mid-Region Council of Governments, found that the businesses operating out of the park have paid $7.7 billion in wages across the surrounding five counties since the park was founded in 1988.

🔶 ABQ BioPark Zoo to host Homeschool Day – Education staff and volunteers plan to teach students about adaptations, predator/prey relations, habitats and habitat design, and more. The Zoo Homeschool Day will be held on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

🔶 BernCo DA pushes for stricter juvenile state code aimed at teens with guns – The DA’s Office said one of the biggest challenges they’re encountering is an outdated state code that lacks proper consequences. District Attorney Sam Bregman said the New Mexico Children’s Code was adopted more than three decades ago and isn’t equipped to tackle the crimes teens are committing today. Bregman said updating the code is about holding youth accountable.

🔶 Albuquerque Public Schools launches reunification cards for school pick-ups after an emergency – APS is launching reunification cards for when parents have to pick up their kids in a “formal, controlled release” after an emergency like extreme weather, power outages, or crime. Soon, parents will get a reunification card unique to each student with their name and a bar code. Families will get two cards per student.

🔶 UNM adding back-in parking spaces along Campus Blvd. – Crews are adding more than 100 angled spaces along Campus Blvd. right next to the dorms. Work got underway on Thursday. It’s expected to continue through October 15.

🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It’ll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. To get involved, you can apply here.

🔶 UNM names interim athletic director – David Williams, currently serving as assistant vice president/deputy athletic director, has been given the new role, effective immediately. As interim athletic director, Williams’ contract includes an annual salary of $325,000 and continues until a permanent AD is hired.

🔶 World Indigenous Business Forum coming to Albuquerque in October – The event will bring in more than 1,000 visitors and 20 guest speakers from around the world, to promote and learn about businesses from across the United States, and more than 20 different countries.

🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

New Mexico Notices

🔶 Five delinquent property tax auctions scheduled in August – The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is holding delinquent property tax auctions in Roosevelt, De Baca, McKinley, Curry, and Los Alamos counties. Registration for the auctions is available in person at 8 a.m. on the day of the auction.

🔶 Report: New Mexico missed out on $405 million from oil and gas revenue – Over the last three years, New Mexico has had more oil production than any other state and that includes Texas, according to the state land office.

🔶 Bernalillo County completes contract negotiations with incoming County Manager – Chavez will replace Julie Morgas Baca, who is retired from after more than 16 years with the county. Chavez is a native New Mexican who is serving on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in the San Jose area.

🔶 Bernalillo County residents can now view updated groundwater levels – The tool allows people to see updated water level measurements from domestic and county-owned wells. The online tool allows the public more accessibility and a better understanding of groundwater data in the county. The county says one purpose of the dashboard is to encourage awareness and promote the protection and conservation of water.

🔶 New Mexico Tourism Department gives out $1M for community cleanup initiatives – The New Mexico Tourism Department is giving out $1 million to help clean up communities in the state. Sixty-seven groups and agencies are participating in the Clean and Beautiful grant program this year which is a new record for the department.

🔶 Tourism to New Mexico state parks on the rise – On Wednesday, Toby Velasquez, the director of the State Parks Division of the Energy Mineral and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) gave lawmakers in the Economic and Rural Development and Policy Committee an idea of how valuable an asset New Mexico’s wildlands are.

🔶 New Mexico awards two long-term leases for wind projects – The first lease was awarded to EDF Renewables to develop a nearly 24,000-acre project in Grant County. The second was awarded to Innegrex Renewable Energy for a 12,000-acre project in Hidalgo County. The projects are expected to bring in more than $146 million in revenue.

🔶 NMDOT shows off underpass in Raton designed to lower wildlife-vehicle collisions – There’s a first-of-its-kind underpass on I-25 in Raton that the New Mexico Department of Transportation is now showing off saying it’s already proving to funnel wild animals under the freeway and cut down on crashes. The $4.5 million underpass, finished late last year, allows for wildlife to walk under the freeway and the state said it’s already working.

🔶 New Mexico tarantulas venture out for mating season – Right now, it is peak mating season for New Mexico tarantulas. The furry eight-legged creatures, from Valencia County down to the Texas state line, are embarking on a quest to find a mate.

🔶 Santa Fe looks to open more Pallet shelters for unhoused individuals – The city is currently looking for privately owned properties to host 64-square-foot shelters, which come from the manufacturer Pallet. The manufactured shelters can accommodate one or two people and have interchangeable bed and desk options, climate control systems, LED lighting, and a locking door.
