SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The San Juan Generating Station, just west of Farmington, is one step closer to ending its legacy of pollution in the Four Corners area.

The plant opened in 1973, providing power to a mix of city and rural electric organizations in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and even as far as California.

Even though it provided energy to surrounding communities, it was also a major source of pollution, according to officials.

When operating at full capacity, the station pumped more than 12 million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year.

On Saturday morning, nearby residents and clean energy advocates watched as four massive smokestacks came crashing down at the plant.

Officials said the demolition is the start of the slow transition from fossil fuels to renewable resources for generating electricity. Community members also add they’re not only hoping the plant will become more sustainable, but that it will improve overall community health for those who live nearby.

let's talk about pollution. Who here has a gas-powered vehicle? or has ever or still goes on planes or trains? Who uses insecticides, pesticides, or fertilizer? Does anyone buy furniture, cook on a gas-powered stove, or have a gas furnace? Has anyone ever burnt weeds in the yards or fields? if you have done or been a part of any of these, then get off your high horse about pollution. knocking down those stacks and others around the country is nothing but political agenda and control.
