ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – UNM sophomore linebacker Jayden Wilson earned his first career start against Montana State in week zero. His defensive drive of the game resulted in a touchdown.

The play came on the sixth snap on Montana State’s opening drive. Wilson sacked Bobcats quarterback Tommy Mellott (the first sack of Wilson’s career) and Mellott fumbled the ball. UNM safety Christian Ellis then recovered the ball and returned it for a touchdown.

“It was amazing,” said Wilson. “I mean, it’s something I worked my butt off for about a year just being here and coming in and out of the facility just giving everything I got and finally when my number was called I knew it was time just to step up, makes some plays. And, I was blessed enough to be able to make that play and it results in a touchdown for our football team.”

Wilson, in his second season at UNM, played primarily on special teams as a true freshman. The El Paso, TX. native says that he put in the effort in the offseason to see more action on defense and credits one person for giving him the motivation to do so.

“My little brother, he’s really my hero. He has down syndrome, so everything I do is for him and he’s the reason I gave it my all every day. Every morning I wake up, he’s the reason I strike to be who I am. He’s not as athletically gifted as I am, obviously. So, it would be a shame not to give everything I have for him.”
