Albuquerque

• August 30 UNM Museum Dance Party – This dance at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is happening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• August 30-31 The Show – Albuquerque’s longest-running comedy show happens every Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.
• August 30-September 1 Sibling Rivalry: A Night of One-Act Plays – Theatre 3 presents a night of one-act plays with tickets costing $10.
• August 31 Downtown Growers’ Market – This happens every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at Robinson Park.
• August 31 Labor Day Market – This event at the ABQ Food Park goes from 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
• August 31 Albuquerque Whole Bead Show Pop-Up – This show put on by Whole Bead Show and Ava Motherwell Collection begins at 11:00 a.m.
• August 31-September 2 Harvest Wine & Music Festival – 200 wines, 20 wineries, and 12 bands on two stages will be performing. Event is 21+.
• September 1 Salsa On Sunday at the Gazebo in Old Town – This event in Old Town Albuquerque begins at 6:30 p.m.
• September 5 Ancora and Albuquerque’s Songwriter’s Cooperative Open Mic – Every Thursday night at Ancora Cafe and Bakery, try your hand at performing some of your own music. Begins at 5:00 p.m.

New Mexico

• August 29-31 Zozobra: The Revenge – This performance at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe begins at 7:30 p.m.
• August 30 FNM Standard Showdown – Friday Night Magic is happening at Rocket City Gaming Lounge in Alamogordo beginning at 5:30 p.m.
• August 31 Saturday Farmers Market – The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is open year-round on Saturdays in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.
• August 31 Duke City Championship Wrestling – This event at the Rio Rancho Events Center at 7:00 p.m.
• August 31 2024 Silver City Farmers’ Market – The market at 1120 N. Main St. in Silver City begins at 9:00 a.m. to noon.
• August 31 Slime Time in Rainbow Rainbow – Slime Time at Meow Wolf returns. This family-friendly event begins at 1:00 p.m.
• August 31 Farmer’s Market in Alamogordo – Check out offerings from local farmers, crafters, bakers, and more from Otero County. Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
• September 1 Sunday Chess Club – Popolo’s Games in Taos will host this free chess club open to all ages at 1:00 p.m.
• September 1 Desert Rhythms at Kit Carson Park – This free community event in Taos features music from Chris Arellano, Gina Chavez, Manzanares, and Nosotros. Event begins at 2:00 p.m.
• September 3 Swing on the Plaza – This free event on the Plaza de Las Cruces begins with free lessons at 7:00 p.m. and a free dance at 8:00 p.m.

Albuquerque Notices

🔶 ABQ BioPark Zoo to host Homeschool Day – Education staff and volunteers plan to teach students about adaptations, predator/prey relations, habitats and habitat design, and more. The Zoo Homeschool Day will be held on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

🔶 UNM receives $1 million for quantum technology research – The National Science Foundation awarded UNM the funds to research the development of a photonic quantum computer that can operate at room temperature. The funds will go toward the Quantum Computing Applications of Photonics pilot program which began earlier this month.

🔶 ABQ Ride suspending services on Labor Day – In celebration of Labor Day, ABQ Ride will suspend services. That includes the bus, Sun Van, and ABQ Ride Connect services. The Alvarado Transportation Center lobby will also be closed. Residents can contact the customer service number from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All services will resume the next day.

🔶 APS superintendent outlines challenges and goals at the first ‘State of the District’ – On Wednesday, Albuquerque Public Schools hosted their first-ever State of the District, hoping to shed light on how they can improve student outcomes. APS Superintendent Gabriella Blakey Blakey said some changes have already started like school partnerships and creating units of study for each grade level.

🔶 Funding approved for renovations at Los Vecinos Community Center – While the plans were approved two weeks ago, on Tuesday night, Bernalillo County commissioners approved the transfer of $1 million from the county’s general fund to pay for the renovations.

🔶 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta selects former Bernalillo County manager as executive director – Julie Morgas Baca will assume leadership of the organization on Sept. 3, a little over one month ahead of the 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta . She succeeds Paul Smith, who has been with the organization for 27 years.

🔶 UNM adding back-in parking spaces along Campus Blvd. – Crews are adding more than 100 angled spaces along Campus Blvd. right next to the dorms. Work got underway on Thursday. It’s expected to continue through October 15.

🔶 World Indigenous Business Forum coming to Albuquerque in October – The event will bring in more than 1,000 visitors and 20 guest speakers from around the world, to promote and learn about businesses from across the United States, and more than 20 different countries.

🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It’ll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. To get involved, you can apply here.

🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

New Mexico Notices

🔶 Bernalillo County residents can now view updated groundwater levels – The tool allows people to see updated water level measurements from domestic and county-owned wells. The online tool allows the public more accessibility and a better understanding of groundwater data in the county. The county says one purpose of the dashboard is to encourage awareness and promote the protection and conservation of water.

🔶 PNM looks to increase rates. How much more could it cost you each month? – The Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) is looking to increase its monthly rates beginning in June 2025. he New Mexico-based electric utility submitted the proposed rate hike to the state’s Public Regulation Commission back in June. So far, the proposal remains under consideration.

🔶 ‘Take a Ride On Us’ offering discounted Uber rides for Labor Day weekend – Bernalillo County announced they are offering residents in Sandoval, Santa Fe, and Bernalillo counties safe riding options during Labor Day weekend. The “Take a Ride on Us” program is offering 2,500 discounted Uber rides on a first-come, first-served basis. The discount begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 30, and runs through Tuesday, September 3 at 2 a.m.

🔶 New Mexico Public Education Department secretary resigns – New Mexico Public Education Secretary Arsenio Romero resigned on Wednesday. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced his resignation and said it was effective immediately. He was the governor’s fourth Public Education Department Secretary serving since February of last year.

🔶 NMSU gets millions in federal grant money to boost manufacturing business – New Mexico State University said they want to be one of the state’s leaders in the field of manufacturing technology. They say they plan to do it with the help of a $7 million grant that will create a network among universities across the state.

🔶 New Mexicans can expect to see more skunks across the state – The New Mexico striped skunk is getting ready to tackle cooler weather by getting out earlier in the evening to bulk up on food. An ABQ BioPark senior zookeeper said to watch carefully for skunks between dawn and dusk when they are most active.

🔶 Santa Fe approves pedestrian bridge demolition after it collapsed – Santa Fe city councilors have unanimously approved a more than $200,000 contract to demolish the bridge at Closson St. and Alameda Blvd. The move comes after an inspection earlier this summer found one side of the bridge had partially collapsed , falling approximately a foot.

🔶 New Mexico State Fair announces Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge contestants – Ten restaurants from across New Mexico will participate in the challenge to serve up the best green chile cheeseburger. The restaurants will compete for two awards; the blind judging and people’s choice awards.

🔶 New Mexico awards two long-term leases for wind projects – The first lease was awarded to EDF Renewables to develop a nearly 24,000-acre project in Grant County. The second was awarded to Innegrex Renewable Energy for a 12,000-acre project in Hidalgo County. The projects are expected to bring in more than $146 million in revenue.

🔶 Santa Fe looks to open more Pallet shelters for unhoused individuals – The city is currently looking for privately owned properties to host 64-square-foot shelters, which come from the manufacturer Pallet. The manufactured shelters can accommodate one or two people and have interchangeable bed and desk options, climate control systems, LED lighting, and a locking door.
