ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Wednesday night, Albuquerque City Councilors called out the Albuquerque Police Department’s Director of Communication for recent social media posts they deemed as “inappropriate.” The department’s social media posts from two days ago criticized people’s opinions and some posts are digs at personal preferences.

“Mean tweets, they’re not okay. And recently, we had some from the PIO of APD and we had this conversation a year ago and it’s serious. We have to take a higher road and sometimes we have to bite our tongue and suck it up,” said City Councilor Renee Grout.

“Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. A year ago, this was incredibly embarrassing that the PIO did what they did,” said City Councilor Brook Bassan.

Multiple city councilors spoke about Gallegos’ actions and asked what the consequences would be moving forward. City Attorney Lauren Keefe said that they would not be discussing personnel matters in the meeting.

This is not the first time this happened. Just last year, APD Spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos was heavily criticized for his management of APD’s X page, formerly known as Twitter.

KRQE News 13 reached out to the mayor’s office which sent a statement:

We’re focused on big issues, we don’t micromanage Twitter banter. We support the department and their ability to push back on misinformation online.
