ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s been one year since an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed outside Isotopes park in a senseless act of violence. The family of the boy, Froylan Villegas, held a vigil Friday night. “He was such a joyful kid. His dream was always to be a jockey, a trainer. He was loved by so many people,” said Beverly Villegas, Froylan Villegas’ aunt and Tatiana Villegas’ mom.

Hugs, prayers, and singing filled the night during the vigil. “He was always happy. He always wanted to be talking to people and just knowing all their stories. Especially if it was about horses,” said Beverly Villegas at the vigil.

Froylan was shot and killed last September outside Isotopes Park. Police said the suspects were targeting a rival gang who were in a white truck similar to the one Froylan was leaving the game in.

According to police, 14 rounds were fired into the truck Froylan was in, killing him and paralyzing his cousin Tatiana Villegas. “Unfortunately, Tatiana stayed paralyzed. There hasn’t been any movement. It’s been a year. But we’re not losing faith. We continue praying, trusting, and believing that God can make a miracle.”

Janae Garcia, Daniel Gomez, Nathan Garley, and Jose Romero were charged in connection to the shooting. “We are hoping justice will be served,” said Beverly Villegas.

The family said they are trying to pick up the pieces after tragedy struck. “Froylan is gone but he’s never forgotten. So many people always remember him and he’s going to be loved until we meet again.”

Police believe Garley pulled the trigger. According to Albuquerque police, Garcia helped get rid of the vehicle used in the shooting. She was arrested last month.
