CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – Lawyers for a man accused of killing two women and kidnapping a baby in Clovis said they plan to request a meeting to determine if their client is competent enough to stand trial. Federal court records show lawyers for Alek Collins will request the hearing in the future but did not specify when that hearing will be.

Collins is accused of killing two women in Clovis, shooting a five-year-old, kidnapping a 10-month-old and then taking the child to Texas. Clovis police say the investigation found Collins had previously contacted the FBI and them he would “murder a bunch of children” if they did not help him find his daughter. There is no indication Collins has a child.

According to the criminal complaint, Collins was placed in a mental health center after that incident. If the case does go to trial, court records show attorneys agreed to have the trial in fall of next year. Collins is facing federal kidnapping and gun charges.
