New video and court documents detail search for suspect in Santa Fe murder

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – New body camera footage and unsealed federal court documents show the rampant crime spree police say a suspect went on across New Mexico which included the murder of an elderly man in Santa Fe.

According to the newly unsealed federal indictment, on July 30, police said Zachary Babitz robbed an Auto Zone in Bernalillo County with a gun. They said he robbed an Albuquerque Wells Fargo the next day. Just a few days later, police said Babitz robbed a Jersey Mike’s Subs with a gun. Then, Babitz is accused of fatally shooting an elderly man in Santa Fe while stealing his car in a Best Buy parking lot. The ensuing manhunt ended in Las Cruces.

On August 10, police said Babitz stole a red Acura MDC and along with a woman named Jessie Dominguez, held up a Las Cruces Arby’s at gunpoint. Police worked with nearby businesses and their security video to track the suspects down.

Police said the two stole a silver Chevy Malibu before crashing it and taking off. Officers eventually tracked Babitz to a Las Cruces dumpster. He was arrested. Dominguez was arrested a few days later.

Babitz is facing a long list of federal charges including carjacking resulting in death and robbery. His suspected accomplice, Jessie Dominguez is charged with armed robbery.
