Traffic laws you might not realize you broke in New Mexico: Changing lanes

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – During driving school people learn the laws and rules of driving on a road safely. But, after getting that driver’s license and spending time on the road, you may find yourself overlooking some of the rules you learned. Something that may seem trivial, but can result in a possible fine and is important to the safety of yourself and other drivers is properly changing lanes and turning.

What are the rules for tinted windows in New Mexico?

According to New Mexico Statutes Motor Vehicles Section 66-7-376 NMSA 1978 , “a vehicle shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety and then given a signal, not less than the last one hundred feet traveled by the vehicle, of the driver’s intention to change lanes”

The simple act of changing lanes without a signal or not signaling for the correct amount of time and distance can result in the driver being found guilty of a penalty assessment misdemeanor and possibly result in a fine of $25.
