How fast is too fast? Speed limit confusion surrounds area near Albuquerque speed camera

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On a busy stretch of Broadway, neighbors complained of high speeds. The City of Albuquerque responded, but now drivers are confused as to what the actual speed limit is.

Neighbors along Broadway said the area lined with homes and businesses has an issue with speeding drivers with one saying, “Yeah, they need to slow down.”

It seems there’s some confusion as to how fast drivers should be going as one community member responded to the question of what the speed limit is, “Right here, I think it’s 30 or 35, I think. I really am not sure. I haven’t seen any signs.”

It’s been there since June: the speed camera near Broadway and Iron. The camera was pushed for by the South Broadway Neighborhood Association, and the city granted it by relocating it from Lead and Mesa.

However, now there’s confusion among drivers as to why they’re getting ticketed.

One said, “I think they need to post more signs. ‘Cause I recently got a ticket, and I went back down that area, and I didn’t see the sign that said the speed limit.”

Another said, “Yeah, you know, I just guess, I just guess it’s 35 around here. I believe that’s what it is, but you know, without a sign, you really don’t know.”

The closest speed limit sign to the speed camera is nearly a mile away, but the city said new signage is coming soon, “Our traffic engineering division is going to be installing additional speed limit signs in the area next week so that it is clear for all drivers,” said Dan Mayfield, with Municipal Development for the City of Albuquerque.

“Right now, I think they’re just making money off of unsuspecting drivers,” said a nearby driver.

KRQE is waiting for confirmation from the city as to whether drivers facing fines from the Broadway and Iron speed cameras will still need to pay their fees.

Those that are complaining are most likely the ones who speed the most up and down broadway.. I grew up down there in that area and it’s has just been getting g worse and worse every year especially around the library area. All I can say is that I hope that they put up another speed camera facing north on broadway and that people will finally obey the speed limit. No back to your training or rule of thumb of how many lanes to what the posted speed limit is just saying
