Tuesday’s Five Facts

[1] City council bill about vacant buildings deferred – Ordinance 42 would penalize owners of dilapidated and vacant buildings if the facility stays in that state. It also involved rules about sidewalks and forming lines. The proposed bill would make it illegal to sleep, sit, or block sidewalks in Downtown. However, the bill was amended to take out the prevention of banners or forming lines. The bill was debated up to 10 p.m.; however, it was deferred until the next meeting on an 8 to 1 vote.

[2] Bernalillo County sheriff and deputy facing new lawsuit after man shot, killed – The family of Joseph Ramos, who was killed by BCSO during a standoff is suing the county, the sheriff and the deputy involved in the shooting. Last November, BCSO says Ramos called 9-1-1 and showed up armed to a fire station, threatening to harm himself. The crisis negotiation team tried to get Ramos to peacefully exit his car, but he refused. Deputies later deployed non-lethal chemicals into Ramos’ car. The lawsuit claims a deputy then shot Ramos, killing him. BCSO says the deputy fired the shot because he saw Ramos move the gun towards deputies. The plaintiff’s attorney did not respond to KRQE’s request for comment. In a statement, BCSO said it does not comment on pending litigation

[3] Rain to push east & mild temperatures – As temperatures across the region rise into the 70’s, 80’s, and low 90’s by the afternoon, plenty of moisture in the air, along with just enough daytime heating, will lead to widespread thunderstorms across the northeastern two-thirds of the region. Stronger southwesterly upper-level winds across New Mexico have returned, allowing for the moisture to shift northeastward.

[4] Coronado Dog Park could soon belong to Creamland Dairy – The city of Albuquerque shut down Coronado Park and a homeless camp inside it; now, the last standing part of that park has a buyer ready to take over. After councilors declared the Coronado Dog Park “not essential” for city use and put it up for sale, there is now a potential buyer. Creamland Dairy is trying to enter a sale agreement with the city to possibly buy the property. According to the agreement, the nearly two-acre plot could sell for just over a million dollars.

[5] White Sands ‘Full Moon Night’ –  White Sands National Park in partnership with the Western National Parks Association, is hosting a Full Moon Night on September 17 at 7:00 p.m., in the White Sands Amphitheater. Guests can enjoy a full moon while listening to the Rio Grande revelers Dixieland Jazz Band. This is the fourth of five full moon night events White Sands is hosting.
