NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Posted speed limits give drivers instruction on how fast to drive in the area to keep everyone safe on the road. Everyone knows speeding can get you pulled over and possibly a ticket, but how much can you be fined for speeding?

Albuquerque International Sunport offers community a ‘taste’ of what’s to come

According to New Mexico Statutes Motor Vehicles Section 66-8-116 NMSA 1978 drivers may face fines of the following amount based on their speed:

    • Up to and including ten mph over the speed limit – $25
    • From 11 up to and including15 mph over the speed limit – $30
    • From 16 up to and including 20 mph over the speed limit – $65
    • From 21 up to and including 25 mph over the speed limit  – $100
    • From 26 up to and including 30 mph over the speed limit – $125
    • From 31 up to and including 35 mph over the speed limit – 150
    • More than 35 mph over the speed limit – $200

The statute states these violations are classified as a “penalty assessment misdemeanor,” but that does term does not apply if the violation causes an accident leading to injury or death. Other penalty assessment misdemeanors include improper display of plate, failure to obey signs and signals, improper passing and turning, failure to stop, and more.

    Albuquerque Speed Cameras

The city of Albuquerque says its Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program is an effective tool to make roads safer. They say these types of programs reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities related to speeding. Through ASE, vehicles speeding through one of the designated areas may receive a $100 citation. People may fight an ASE citation, but not in the same way they fight a normal traffic citation issued by law enforcement. Anyone who wants to fight an ASE citation must set up a hearing through the City Clerk’s Office. For more information about the ASE camera program, click here.
