CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Carlsbad’s City Council approved a trial run on a single-use plastic bag ban Tuesday night. The trial period will last for two years and will begin on February 1, 2025.

Under the ban, restaurants and retailers within the city are not allowed to offer plastic bags to customers. Instead, they are encouraged to provide paper or reusable bags for free or for a small charge.

Councilor Mary Garwood helped draft the ordinance and says it got unanimous support at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Garwood said the idea behind the ordinance is to keep the area litter-free and to protect animals.

Santa Fe County passed a similar ordinance this year and banned plastic bags in unincorporated areas of the county.

no one ever thinks forward to what consequences come with new inventions/technology. plastic, cell phones, social media, I could go on & on. They were amazing inventions and have made our lives easier in so many ways, but they also come with some serious side affects as we get further into the journey of using them. I'm as guilty as anyone about taking them all for granted and I am promising myself to be better.
