FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico high school student is facing charges after police claimed he made a social media threat against his school.

According to Farmington police, a 15-year-old student at Piedra Vista High School posted a picture to social media holding a firearm and included a threatening message.

The student was arrested and is now facing charges of interference with the education process and unlawful possession of a gun by a person under 19.

The student is being held in the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center.

This comes as New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said state laws against children making threatening claims at schools are not strong enough.

Several schools also received threats last week, including some in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Raton. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

“School threats are taken very seriously. Posting such content on social media is neither funny nor harmless and we will attempt to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law possible. We urge parents to speak with their children about the importance of responsible online behavior and the potential ramifications of threatening actions. We will continue to work with Farmington Municipal Schools to ensure the safety of all our children,” said Farmington police.
