RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a contentious week for Rio Rancho public schools this week as ideologies clashed about what should be allowed in classrooms.

Several speakers gave public comments during the meeting with some advocating to bring “safe space” signage for LGBTQIA+ students. This comes as teachers at Cleveland High School received an email last year saying that all pride flags must be removed from any of the school’s signage.

Additionally, there were parents and staff suggesting administrators put Christian bibles in public school libraries. Some argued it would provide moral and ethical benefits.

Speakers also suggested starting what is considered to be “evangelical bible clubs” called “Good News Clubs.”

A spokesperson for Rio Rancho Public Schools said bibles are already allowed in school libraries.

That's sad about the pride flags. Young people need that safe space. It seems odd that they would disallow the LGBQT+ pride flags but will consider bible groups. That makes me wonder where this is headed since most christian ideologies deny gay rights and inclusion. Besides, this is a public institution. We must always preserve the separation of church and state. Too many times, christians create a negative environment for those who are non-christians or gay. It's a shame because if one is following a religion based on Jesus' teachings, love, compassion, understanding, and inclusion should follow.
