DURANGO, C.O. (KRQE) –It may sound far-fetched but southwest Colorado now has a radio station dedicated to “man’s best friend.” It’s called Doggy FM and meant exclusively for dogs.

At Hutton Broadcasting in southern Colorado, Doggy FM debuted just a few weeks ago, with a dog-led morning show featuring some barking talent. However, it’s not only for the dogs, listeners can enjoy the soothing sounds of the outdoors, educational programming on dog care, and even dog-themed music.

“We came up with the idea because we just thought who doesn’t love dogs and it would be a great thing and you know dogs are home, they can’t maybe go to work so why not do a station for dogs,” said Jack Llewellyn, General Manager, Hutton Broadcasting.

Broadcasting with dogs can get a little rough at times though. “It’s kind of hard to keep them sitting still and in one area and point them towards a microphone, it’s really difficult, but I think it also helps out a lot,” said Dustin Nolen, Chief Operator, Hutton Broadcasting Durango.

While it is a fun station, Doggy FM is in collaboration with La Plata County Humane Society to help pets get a home. “As a personal listener, I hear them on the radio all the time and I just think it’s funny to hear a dog on the radio so it’s just been a wonderful partnership,” said Julie Dreyfuss, Executive Director of La Plata County Humane Society.

And some say it’s worth tuning in to. “For sure, she is so reactive to weird noises or anything like that, I think it’s adorable to watch her listen to stuff,” said Madeline Landess, a dog owner and Durango resident.

The positive results, already rolling in. “We never even expected it to get to the point that it’s at now, but now that we actually have real dogs coming in and you know playing the talent a little bit, it’s super fun,” said Beau Herndon, Assistant at Hutton Broadcasting.

You can listen to the station on 99.7 in Durango, or online .
