Experts push lawmakers for Native American food insecurity solutions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Experts went before state lawmakers emphasizing the realities of food insecurity in Native communities across New Mexico.

Representatives with the Food Depot and Roadrunner Food Bank met with the Indian Affairs Committee this week, sharing their concerns about the lack of secure access to nutrition in Indigenous communities. A presentation cited census data showing one-in-four Native Americans in New Mexico are experiencing hunger with more than 100,000of those being children. The presenters are proposing a $10 million allocation in the state’s budget for fiscal year 2026.
