Two going to trial for New Mexico woman’s ‘torturous’ death while in caretaker custody

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Trial dates for two people accused of abusing a woman with developmental disabilities, causing her death, have been set.

Investigators claimed Angelita Chacon, the primary caretaker of the woman, and her girlfriend, Patricia Hurtado, drove the 38-year-old Rio Rancho woman to the Mexico border. When border agents searched the van, they found the woman unresponsive on the floor of the van.

Court documents reported there were sores and bruises on her body , along with two holes in her leg that were so deep they appeared to show bones.

Investigators believe Chacon was taking the woman to Mexico for medical care to avoid social services.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez called the injuries “nothing short of torture.”

Chacon and Hurtado are now scheduled for trial in September of next year. They are facing neglect, abuse, and false imprisonment charges.
