ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Big changes are coming to the South Valley area over the next year after a local film studio bought up a large piece of land to build sound stages.

    Story continues below

That studio will sit on more than 18 acres of land, just minutes south of downtown, in Albuquerque’s South Valley. It will be owned by Rio Bravo Studios. It was purchased by local developer Daniel Chavez back in September with the goal of meeting the demand for more sound stages in the state.

“Albuquerque, New Mexico is a huge draw in the film industry, and as such, people are lined up to come here for productions,” said Scott Whitefield, a commercial broker with CBRE who represents Chavez.

According to Chavez’s brokers, the plan is to build four sound stages on the land. They’re also looking to build two mill shops where set pieces are built and a 450-space parking lot.

“The location was perfect, the land was available,” said Shona Martinez, another CBRE commercial broker representing Chavez. “It’s close to all of your amenities.”

Construction is expected to begin in coming months with officials saying they hope to have the facility operational by the end of 2025.
