ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Justice Reinvestment Working Group went before lawmakers this week and outlined problems withing the criminal justice system that they say the state needs to focus on in the next legislative session. Presenters pointed out two major issues, addiction and mental health.

    Story continues below

The group says lawmakers can reduce the number of people cycling through the justice system for repeated petty misdemeanors by investing in a 24-7 crisis response team. The group also suggested expanding collaboration between law enforcement and mental healthcare providers. They say this would help make sure those who need treatment get help and leaves officers available to handle more serious crimes.

Committee members urged presenters to draft their proposed legislation now, to make sure it gets in front of legislators in time for the next legislative session.
