GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – The Navajo Nation hopes two new detention centers will ease travel times and financial costs for police. One is located in Shiprock while the other is in Fort Defiance, Arizona more than 30 miles northwest of Gallup.

Tribal leadership said officers often have to travel long distances to book an inmate. For example, officers in Shiprock need to drive about 100 miles to Kayenta. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said the centers will also improve community safety.
