Friday’s Five Facts

[1] 10th APD officer placed on administrative leave in DWI Unit investigation – Another officer with the Albuquerque Police Department has been placed on leave in connection to the  ongoing DWI Unit investigation . Deputy Commander Gustavo Gomez is the latest to be implicated in the investigation of former and current DWI Unit officers after allegations of misconduct. Gomez worked in the DWI unit from 2010 to 2013 and and joined the Internal Affairs Force Division in January of this year. To date, ten officers have been placed on leave in relation to the investigation. So far, no officers have been charged in connection to the investigation.

[2] Recovering addicts push to break the cycle of addiction at BernCo ‘Fentanyl Forum’ – Bernalillo County held their first ‘Fentanyl Forum’ on Thursday. Hundreds attended the event, bringing awareness, education and resources to the community. While many shared their road to recovery, they also shared the dangers of the drugs that are often laced. The event was hosted by Keep NM Alive, a Bernalillo County community initiative, focused on raising awareness and providing essential resources to combat deadly fentanyl addiction in the state.

[3] Stormy with snow ahead for New Mexico – The strongest storm system of the season is inbound across the region, but there will be even more thunderstorms and snow to come this weekend temperatures dropping even more with strong winds. Widespread rain, with locally heavy rainfall, and mountain snow will continue through the weekend.

[4] A first look at New Mexico’s newest housing facility for teenage boys – KRQE News 13 got a firsthand look at one of the state’s newest facilities. The transitional housing facility opened in May of this year with a goal of keeping teenage boys from sleeping in state office buildings. Since they opened, 15 kids have gone through the program and successfully found a foster home or some other form of care. It comes with on-site resources, like schooling programs, and services to teach independent living skills- among others.

[5] ABQ BioPark preparing for elephant to give birth – Rozie the elephant is 22 months pregnant and the ABQ BioPark says she could deliver her baby at any time. Staff and volunteers are on a 24/7 watch to make sure Rozie has what she needs when she goes into labor. The BioPark said Rozie has been on a special diet throughout her pregnancy.
