SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Authorities in Santa Fe have identified a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run . The incident took place on Tuesday, October 15.

The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office said Monique Maes, 43, of Santa Fe, was with her two children on Tuesday evening when they were hit by a vehicle on Paseo de Nopal. The children were injured, but Maes died the next day.

Now, a suspect has been identified in the case.

1 person killed during ‘code enforcement’ operation at Tewa Lodge, APD says

Authorities believe Mario Mendez, 29, was driving the vehicle that hit Maes and her children. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, claiming he committed several crimes such as homicide by vehicle, abuse of children, duty to give information and render aid, and tampering with evidence.

If you know his whereabouts, call 505-428-3720.

Maes was reported to be a city employee, and the mayor released a statement about her passing.

The City of Santa Fe sends its deepest condolences to the family, especially the children, of our long-time employee Monique Maes. Monique passed away following a hit-and-run car crash this week. Monique began her employment at the City of Santa Fe in 2000. She was most recently a contracts administrator for the Buckman Direct Diversion. We hope the family finds strength in the support of Monique’s City of Santa Fe family. We will do all we can to help ensure Monique’s children are comforted and cared for during this tragic time. The City of Santa Fe has counseling and services available for employees to help cope with the sudden loss of Monique.

    Mayor Alan Webber
