A storm system has been bringing rain and snow to parts of New Mexico overnight. More heavy rain and mountain snow will continue through the weekend.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico through Noon on Sunday.

Through the rest of this morning, scattered showers and storms, some of which could produce heavy rain, will continue across New Mexico, still switching over to snowfall above 8,000′. This afternoon, storm coverage and intensity will really pick up in eastern New Mexico, where widespread storms will drop heavy rain. Storms could also bring large hail, damaging winds gusts, and even an isolated tornado. A Flood Watch has been expanded to include almost the entire eastern half of New Mexico through Sunday morning. Rounds of scattered showers will continue in central, northern, and northwestern New Mexico, along with southern Colorado through the day today, with locally heavy rainfall possible as well. Over 1″ of rain is likely across eastern parts of the state, with locally higher amounts approaching Temperatures will also be much cooler today across the state with some breezy to locally windy weather.

    Forecast Continues Below

Rain and storms will stick around northern and eastern New Mexico Saturday night into Sunday morning, with a little bit of a break by Sunday afternoon. Isolated storms will develop in eastern New Mexico by early Sunday evening, with some of these storms turning strong to severe. A few isolated showers and storms will also be possible in central and northern New Mexico with drier air moving into western New Mexico. Temperatures will remain cool again Sunday afternoon with another cold front moving through the state.

It will be a very cold Monday morning all across New Mexico. However, with dry air returning to the entire state by Monday afternoon, high temperatures will start a warming trend.
