ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An operation to tackle a problem property ended in an officer-involved shooting.

The Tewa Lodge used to be a local gem, but lately, it’s been developing a poor reputation. The motel is located at Central and Alvarado Drive, but it’s becoming a magnet for crime.

CABQ Planning Department Director Alan Varela explained the site was continuously dirty with exposed wires and feces. The city’s code enforcement was contacted by the owner of the lodge to ask for help to address the issues at the property, even saying he was threatened, and visitors weren’t paying within the proper time frame.

The city said that some tenants were living there and actually paying, but they believe nightly stays or illegal squatters were causing issues and dangerous situations. The city has decided to shut the lodge down and help those who are staying there find new housing.

The code enforcement team said they want to help provide safer spaces in the city and address problematic areas.

If you know of a problem property, you can contact 311 online , on the phone, or by using their mobile app. Tips can even be made anonymously.

Now turn it into apartments along the other fleabag nuisance motels between Wyoming and San Mateo on Central. How visitors do you see staying in them more than an hour?
