Grant will give Newton seniors free transportation May 20-24

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Harvey County Department on Aging, Harvey County Interurban, and the Asbury Park Foundation have partnered to provide free transportation for Newton residents over 60 years old.

The complimentary transportation will be from May 20 to 24. May is Older Americans Month, and the transportation initiative was crafted to match the theme for 2024, a news release from Harvey County said.

The program is focused on benefiting older adults in Newton who struggle with transportation. Utilizing Interurban vehicles, the program will allow residents to pursue various ventures of their choosing to encourage social connections, such as shopping on Main Street, meeting friends, making a hair appointment or visiting the Newton Senior Center.

The offer is for non-medical trips only.

“Everyone benefits from community connections and reducing isolation,” said Department on Aging director Lona Kelly in a news release. “We want to provide an option for adults 60 and older who may not have the resources or access to local transportation, and we’re hopeful this opportunity encourages them to enjoy their community and make powerful connections.”

The Asbury Park Foundation is providing grant funds to offset the cost.

To make a reservation, call the Interurban office at 316-284-6802 . Reservations require 24-hour notice and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Interurban vehicles are wheelchair and scooter accessible.
