HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW)- The Hutchinson USD 308 School District is considering a $110 million bond to improve some of the district’s facilities.

The district says a combined middle school and an early education center would benefit students and staff in the district. But, the proposed bond to make that happen was met with mixed reactions from the community.

“I would not be opposed to building a new school for the Pre-K children, but I hate to see that much money go into our tax base,” said Nancy Peak, who has a grandchild in the middle school.

“I’m not sure why we would change it when we could put that money towards other things that need improvement, like playground equipment at elementary schools,” said Yanett Castaneda, a parent.

The district says the upgrades will bring students and staff a more bonded experience. The sports complex at the 23rd and Severance roundabout is a potential location for a combined middle school. The early education center would serve three and 4-year-olds under one roof.

“They are currently spread out across the district in about a dozen different locations,” said USD 308 Director of Communications Stacy Goss.

“I think we’re still working out some of those issues, so I think a lot of people are still really hopeful the end solution meets everybody’s criteria,” Goss said.

NO....we used to have a great combined 7, 8, 9th middle school and they wanted it all cut up then...and NOW they want to combine again???...There is nothing wrong with the buildings we have...why would we pay unnecessary taxes?
