WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — City officials and members of the Wichita Police Department were on hand Thursday to cut the ribbon on the new Patrol East substation.

The substation, located at 5215 E. Lincoln, opened last month after two years of construction. It is 24,000 square feet and has room for 150 staff.

“If you need a conference room, if you need a briefing room, if you need an evidence room, holding cells, there are areas specific for their specific needs,” Capt. Jason Cooley said.

The new substation replaces the former location at 350 S. Edgemoor and is the first new police station in Wichita in 30 years.

“So, I hope the officers feel emboldened to come into the station, come into work. It shows that the police department and the city does care and appreciate what they’re doing and we’re willing to give back to that,” Cooley added.

The next new substation will be built in 2025 on land by Northwest High School. USD 259 is looking at expanding student opportunities.

“We look to create a career pathway for talent pipeline for high school kids who are interested in getting into law enforcement and criminal justice and working together with the police department to do that and make that great to make our city even better,” said USD 259 Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld.
