LARNED, Kan. (KSNW) — A Larned resident rescued a bird injured as hail pounded down Friday morning.

Tyrel Garcia tells KSN he was standing on his porch, watching and filming the hail falling outside, when he saw a bird flying for cover. He saw the bird get struck by hail and fall.

Garcia says he ran inside, grabbed a towel to help shield the bird, and brought it inside. Unsure of what to do, he contacted a veterinary office.

They told him to contact the Great Bend Britt Spaugh Zoo , which has a rehabilitation center. Garcia drove the bird to Great Bend.

The bird, identified as a juvenile Mississippi Kite , is being treated for a broken wing.
