BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — On Monday, two 14-year-old Augusta girls appeared before a judge in connection to the murder of a 93-year-old woman.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said the teens were arrested last Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder in last year’s killing of Joanne Johnson of Augusta.

The teens are being kept in separate juvenile detention centers. On Monday, the judge said the girls should remain in custody.

The county attorney told KSN News that the girls have not been charged yet. Their first appearance is scheduled for Aug. 29.

Johnson was found dead inside her home at 1711 Robbins St. in Augusta on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023. At the time, authorities said Johnson was killed sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday evening.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the case is still under investigation. It has not released a motive for Johnson’s death.
