The Indian American community, along with other Asian Americans, celebrated the 78th Independence Day of India. The occasion annually commemorates Aug. 15, 1947, when India gained its independence from the nearly 200-year British colonial rule.

The celebration comprised of Indian performance arts, food, speeches and several interactive sessions. The association has existed in Wichita since 1985, and its mission is to educate and share the diversity of the Indian subcontinent in Kansas.

“This is to bring and showcase the culture of India, and we celebrate the independence and the freedom, you know, which is increasingly becoming something that we tend to worry about, and so, this allows us to celebrate along with the kids,” said Niti Singh, President of Cultural Association of India.

Singh adds there are more than 2,000 families of Indian origin in Wichita.
