WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita Collegiate Spartans are the next focus of our football previews. For the past four years, head coach Troy Black and company have only lost two games per season.

“Just our ability to work as hard as we can and just no complaining,” said senior quarterback Harrison Simon. “We’ll just work. Whatever has to get done will get done by us. It’s the little things, I think, this year that help us.”

However, when you’re in a league and district with Andale and Cheney, the road to a state championship has not been easy. Coach Black says that the ultimate goal is a state championship, but first, they must handle those two powerhouses if they hope to achieve those lofty aspirations.

“To win League, we got to beat Andale,” explained Black, “and to win District, you’re going to have to beat Cheney. So that’s really a kind of our first step, the goals anyway. It’s, you know, everybody always talks about the end, but it’s like, ‘Hey, if you want to play at the end, you’ve got to take care of it.’ And in our case, league first district second. So that’s always been our goal. The third is just to make the playoffs. You know, we got a really tough schedule, and you got to be in the top three in your district or whatever it is to get in there. We’re going to battle every week. So that’s kind of that’s kind of their goal and their mindset.”

The team has several new starters on both sides of the ball, but players say that they are ready to get this season started.

“This is probably the best summer that we’ve had as far as getting guys to show up and work hard and really just get outside of their comfort zone,” added senior offensive lineman Cooper Brown. “I feel like our seniors have done a really, really good job of just kind of pushing everybody to be the best they can be.”

Not what is on the agenda is seeing if they can prove the doubters wrong in a very tough 3A Classification.

“Goals are hard for a reason,” said senior wide receiver Markus Gorges. “I think if we can stay consistent with that mindset, I think we can go places because we have the talent this year. It’s just a matter of how much we want it.”
