High School Football Previews: Hutchinson Salthawks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) – The focus of Thursday’s high school football previews is the Hutchinson Salthawks, who are looking for a third straight winning season with head coach Mike Vernon.

The Salthawks have always been a consistent team in the AVCTL, but this year, they have a very tough league to compete with; according to players, it’s a challenge that they are welcoming.

“The overall goal is we all want to go play for a championship and win. We all know we got to take it one game at a time. In fact, that time just gets better each day. You can’t look to November 23rd or whenever state is when we guys look at week one and tomorrow. We’ve got to focus on the little things first before we can focus on the big picture,” said Hutchinson senior middle linebacker Kevin Willson.

“Working really, well because last year we had basically the same amount of guys, same guys. So, a lot of us are seniors now. We’ve got a couple of young guys there, but they’re stepping up and. have been good,” said Hutchinson senior defensive end Skylar Ray.

This is Coach Vernon’s seventh year, and he says he’s liked what he’s seen from his team as they prepare for their season opener next Friday night against the Andover Central Jaguars.

“You know, I think that they’re extremely competitive. Yeah, you got almost got to pull back a little bit. But, you know, as a coach, you’d rather have that. You’d rather have them getting after it than having to get them up every day. And that hasn’t been the case. And, you know, it’s been it’s been a good four days practice and going to have a great one tonight too,” said Coach Vernon.
