KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Andrew Lester’s jury trial that was set to begin Oct. 7 has been delayed.

On Monday morning, a Clay County judge ordered a mental exam for Lester.

Lester’s attorney filed a motion saying he thinks his client isn’t fit to stand trial in August. He is accused of shooting 16-year-old Ralph Yarl.

Yarl was trying to pick up his siblings when he went to Lester’s home by mistake. The defense argues Lester was acting in self-defense and feared for his life.

Lester will appear for a docket call on Oct. 8.
