Greer has appeared on stage with the band for more than 2,300 live shows. His work has contributed to numerous studio albums, including “Power,” “The Prelude Implicit,” “Freaks of Nature,” “Always Never The Same,” “In the Spirit of Thing,” and more.

“He stood shoulder to shoulder with us through both the ups and the downs,” said KANSAS original guitarist Richard Williams. “His voice, both singing and emceeing, has been a constant with us on stage. The entire KANSAS family will miss him.”

KANSAS announced on social media on Monday, Sept. 9 that Greer’s replacement will be bassist and vocalist Dan McGowan. He has served as Greer’s substitute on stage for several performances in 2024.

“I am thrilled and honored to be joining KANSAS,” McGowan said. “I am also deeply aware of the gigantic shoes that I will be filling. Dave Hope and Billy Greer are among the best musicians in rock history. I want the fans to know that I love the music of KANSAS, and I hold it in highest reverence. I am committed to doing justice to the band’s incredible legacy, and I am so grateful for this unbelievable opportunity!”

McGowan hails from New Jersey and is the singer and guitarist for the progressive rock bank “The Tea Club.” His experience also includes work collaborating with KANSAS keyboardist Tom Brislin in his band “Gold Rotation.”

Though Greer’s time with the band has come to a close, it is not expected to impact any of KANSAS’ upcoming performances. The band will have a live show on Oct. 5 in Wichita and two live shows in Topeka on Oct. 3-4 as part of its 50th Anniversary Tour.
