Kansas could receive $35M to expand solar production

TOPEKA, Kan. ( KSNT ) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it would invest, if approved, $35 million to expand renewable energy sources in the Sunflower State.

The USDA announced on Wednesday, Sept. 25, that it was working on the awards process for the Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program. If given the green light, the program would see $35 million invested in seven solar facilities in the state. According to the press release from the USDA, the power generated from the investment would be enough to power 3,700 homes.

The communities near the power facilities include Clay Center, Ellinwood, Greensburg, Hillsboro, Marion, Wellington and Winfield.

“Rural electric utilities and power generation are the backbone of Kansas power delivery,” USDA Rural Development Kansas Director Christy Davis said. “When we invest in them, we strengthen Kansas energy security and opportunities in the state.”

According to the press release, the USDA has funded 27 projects for more than $916 million to date.
