WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The cause of death for Wichita firefighter Ty Voth was released on Thursday, and the City of Wichita is asking for a federal investigation.

Voth, 27, died while on duty battling a house fire near Haysville. The medical examiner determined Voth died of “unspecified cardiac arrest while fighting a fire.” It was ruled an accident.

The City of Wichita submitted an application to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to look into Voth’s death, but it’s not a guarantee the agency will investigate.

The city said all agencies involved in the incident — Sedgwick County Fire District #1, Derby Fire, Local 135 and the Wichita Fire Department — are fully supportive of an investigation.

Voth died on Aug. 1 after collapsing while crews responded to a house fire in the 9800 block of S. Laura St. just before 3 p.m. A graduate of Newton High School in 2015, he worked for the Manhattan Fire Department before taking a job with the WFD, where he served for five years.
