WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A 5-year-old boy was critically injured in southwest Wichita Thursday evening. It happened just before 6 p.m. in the 3300 block of S. Kessler St.

The Wichita Police Department told KSN on Friday that the 5-year-old boy accidentally fired the flare gun in his face while inside the car. Other children were inside the car while the mother talked to the child’s grandmother outside.

After the bang, the boy exited the car, which caught fire. The boy was hit in the forehead by the flare and suffered a head injury as well as burns. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
