    Tour a underground city in Kansas thought to be haunted

    ELLINWOOD, Kan. (KSNW) — Kansas is full of communities with a rich and storied history.

    Ellinwood, located in Barton County in the middle of the state, is one of many cities in Kansas with a unique feature: an underground city . Built in the late 1800s, Ellinwood’s underground city housed any business deemed “unfit for women,” such as saloons and gambling halls, went underground in Ellinwood.

    Since it opened to tourism in the 1980s, thousands of visitors have traveled to Ellinwood to tour the city’s underground. The organization that supports the underground is hosting an event for those who love the paranormal or who are just looking for a potential fright as Halloween approaches.

    Stargazers invited to event at Kansas Wetlands

    The Ellinwood Underground City Foundation will host “A Haunted Living Revelry” on Friday, Oct. 25. The event includes:

    • A Greeting in the Lobby of the Bank of Ellinwood by the spirit of Leo Bockemohle, Bank President. Wine and Cheese will be served
    • Guests will then proceed to Tom Drakes Harness Shop. The Spirit of Mr. Drake will introduce himself and serve Beer and cowboy beans with curled bacon
    • The next stop will be Jung’s Barber Shop and Bath House, where the Spirit of Mr. Jung will regale guests with fascinating stories and serve warm mulled wine and wrapped brat
    • The group will then move to the Parlor in the Wolf Hotel, where the Spirit of Mrs. Wolf will be serving Rum Punch and crudités
    • Moving along to the Sunflower Dining Room, the spirit of the unfortunate Bernard millet will share a repast of mimosas, chicken and dumplings, green beans and a biscuit
    • The progressive meal will end in the tunnels and the underground saloon, where surprise spirits will greet, meet and serve apple schnapps, apple strudel and German chocolate cake.
    • The evening will conclude with Dancing with the spirits, drinks and a silent auction in the hotel lobby

    Then, at midnight, you can participate in a 1hour paranormal investigation tour by candlelight. Tickets start at $60 for the guided tour and dinner and $75 for the first tour, dinner, and the midnight paranormal candlelight tour.
