Sedgwick County Zoo talks Wild Lights, shows off Madagascar hissing cockroach

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Schanee Anderson from the Sedgwick County Zoo showed off the Madagascar hissing cockroach during Tuesday’s Wild Side segment.

The cockroach is one of the largest species, reaching 7.5 centimeters. It is native to Madagascar and is found in rotting logs. Cockroaches can live up to 5 years. The cockroaches can be kept as pets and require minimal maintenance. They are often placed in classrooms for studying and observing.

Anderson also talked about Wild Lights starting at the zoo. The zoo says all the lights will be new this year and feature 60 lighted vignettes, including mythical plants, animals, and other creatures. The display opens Oct. 16 and runs through Dec. 22.
